Welcome to Blakes Air Conditioning

What is Air Conditioning?

Air Conditioning is the precise control of air temperature, air cleanliness, air flow and humidity. Split air conditioners regulate each of these elements around the clock to provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, year after year.

Air conditioning can work in two different modes; heating or cooling, in order to carefully regulate air temperature.

Cooling

Excess heat inside the building is absorbed by a liquid refrigerant that circulates within the air conditioning unit.

The refrigerant turns into a gas as it absorbs the heat, and is carried to the outdoor unit, where the heat is released into the atmosphere.

Once the heat is release the gas returns to it's liquid form and is transported back to the indoor unit.

This cycle is repeated until the desired temperature is reached within the building.

Heating

An air conditioning unit with a heat pump is also able to reverse the cooling process, extracting heat from the air outside and releasing it inside the building.

Heat can be captured from the air outside even when the temperature falls below -10°C, reducing the need for a boiler, and thereby producing savings in terms of energy and cost.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an air conditioning system that can both heat and cool air using the same unit.

During the warmer months a heat pump performs in a similar way to a standard air conditioning unit to cool air within a building. However, in the cooler months a heat pump unit acts to capture heat from the air outside and transfer it into the building warming the air within.

Combining both heating and cooling functions into a single unit is not only economical in terms of the initial outlay, but also during the functioning of the unit. An electric heater for example generates just 1 Kilowatt of heat from 1 Kilowatt of electricity, while a heat pump can generate approx. 3 kilowatts of heat from the same kilowatt of electricity.

It is important to consider when choosing an air conditioning unit, that while there is not a large difference between the cost of a heat pump and a standard air conditioning unit, it is not possible to convert a standard cooling only air conditioner into a heat pump.
